Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry receives $10,000 from 100 Women Who Care

TRAVERSE CITY — 100+ Women Who Care Grand Traverse and Leelanau County awarded the nonprofit Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry $10,000 during a recent meeting at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club.

According to an April 10 news release, Hoop’s Pet Food Pantry helps Grand Traverse Area pet owners care for their pets by providing food and supplies donated by area residents and businesses. In its fifth year, an all-volunteer Hoop’s crew serves approximately 500 pets each month.

Pets served include cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, horses, guinea pigs, and others. Donations of pet food and gently used pet supplies are distributed on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 11 am-2 pm in the Square Deal Country Store parking lot, 900 Woodmere, Traverse City. There are no requirements for assistance.

“Our goal is to keep pets with their people, and in the process, we created a community of pet lovers who gather on those Saturdays and at other events,” spokesperson for Hoop’s Robin Rosier said.

Funding from 100 Women Who Care will go toward food supplies. Cash donations of $1,000-$2,000 are needed every month to supplement food donations. Hoop’s will also use the 100 WWC donation to start Charlotte’s Web, a new initiative by the group to provide a safety net, such as ramps and supplements, for senior pets.

Northwest Michigan Supportive Housing and Battle of the Books (National Writers Series program) were two other nonprofits the 100 WWC members learned about at the April 9 meeting.

While votes were being counted, 100 Women Who Care members heard from last quarter’s recipient, Step Up Northern Michigan. Step Up is using 100 WWC’s financial assistance to fill food pantries at local schools and provide meal packs for students that include a recipe and ingredients to make the meals at home.

The 100+ Women Who Care Grand Traverse and Leelanau County have been distributing quarterly gifts of $10,000 or more since December 2011.

Over 150 presentations have been made during that time, educating members about the many nonprofits in the five-county region. The group has donated over $500,000. The next meeting will be held at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club on July 9, 2025 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
