The Dead Ends on Spruce in Traverse City Taking Halloween Decorating to a Different Level

A house on Spruce Street in Traverse City called The Dead Ends on Spruce is taking decorating for Halloween to a different level.

Vicky Card, a critical care nurse at Munson, owns the house and has always loved Halloween.

In 2017, she hit what she considers the lotto, a Craig List posting offering free Halloween decorations.

“I responded to it thinking it was just going to be, you know, a couple of pumpkins or something. And the person responded by, saying, Do you have a truck and a trailer? And I was like, Yeah, that’s a lot of stuff. And we went over there, and the whole basement was full of Halloween things. A lot of our figurines came from her,” explained Vicky Card.

Those decorations were just the beginning of what has turned into The Dead Ends Spruce.

“I have worked a lot of overtime in the past couple of years with COVID-19 and made a lot of extra money. Every year we just get bigger and better.” so much of the extra money has gone into this,” said Card.

Card’s husband, Nate Taylor, is responsible for making Card’s spooky vision come true. He starts working on the display in September.

“What I want people to take when they come here and leave is like is the feeling that, wow, did I just walk into another world,” said Nate Taylor. “With all the fog, animatronics, and the visual, there’s so much to see.”

Ghosts, goblins and witches aside, it’s about helping people create memories.

“That’s what it’s all about. And that’s the principle driving factor of just bringing joy to the community, giving back whatever I can,” said Card.

“We have one family that lives a block away from us, has a little boy named Sam. He built a Lego display of my display, brought it to me, and said, this is the most favorite time of the year, explained Taylor.

Taylor says he is already working on some new decorations for next year but keeps the details a surprise.
