Election day is fast approaching, and it’s important to make sure you are signed up and ready to cast your ballot.

In what is expected to be one of the highest turnouts for a primary, the state is reminding people to be registered and have a plan to vote.

With the primary just two weeks from Tuesday on August 2, it’s time to get your ballots in. But, it’s also time to make sure you’re registered to vote, not only for the primary but to get ready for the general three months after that.

“Eligible citizens can register in-person at their local clerk’s office through 8PM on Election Day,” said Tracy Wimmer, spokeswoman for the State Department.

Monday was the last day for Michiganders to register to vote online in time for the primary. But all is not lost, Michiganders can still register in-person at their clerk’s office and even get it done right then as well.

“If you’re already at the clerk’s office it’s actually a really great option just to fill out your ballot right there in-person,” said Wimmer, “Hand it back in and that is our form of early voting here in Michigan. Michigan citizens can do it anytime at their clerk’s office between now and Election Day.”

Once registered, if you are more traditional and want to vote at the polls, you are good to go on Election Day. If you want an absentee ballot, make sure to request it by Friday, July 29.

“That request must be received by the clerk by 5PM, said Wimmer, “The Friday before the election.”

The same deadlines apply for the general election, register at least 15 days prior to Election Day and request an absentee by the Friday before.

The State Department is pushing people to vote early, with two weeks to go, not to trust the speed of the post office, make sure it gets in.

“Either drop it in the mail immediately or within the next couple of days they should start transitioning to a plan to return the ballot in-person,” said Wimmer.

In the state of Michigan, during the Primary, people can only vote for one political party.
