Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference Brings Up Challenges with Tourism This Year

Tourism tops in northern Michigan and anyone who’s anyone in the industry is in Traverse City this week.

The Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference brings industry leaders, chambers of commerce and visitors bureaus from across the state together at the Grand Traverse Resort. This year it’s all about tourism’s big comeback after the challenges of COVID.

Travel and capacity restrictions, layoffs hospitality and now staffing concerns are some of what hotels and restaurants are eager to overcome. The CEO of Mackinac Island Tourism, Tim Hygh, says demand is not the problem.

“The only thing holding us back would be lack of employees and not being able to rent every room every night because we didn’t have enough housekeepers but the demand is there,” said Hygh. “People definitely want to come back to northern Michigan and we anticipate that again this year.”

Tomorrow the conference wraps up with keynote speakers on Michigan’s strategic travel recovery plan and diversity.
