LSSU’s 2022 Banned Words List Released

The list is out of the words many hope stay in 2021, and we don’t hear next year.

Lake Superior State University has been keeping up with the tradition since 1976, to uphold, support and protect excellence in language and has gained attention around the globe.

The nominations are voted on by the university’s English department, and views the entire event as a serious joke, where the words they nominate are comments and common phrases on what’s going on in the world, ranging from such words as “man cave” to “epic.”

Banished words are also judged on how often they’re used, and how effective the words can be.

“Every year, we look forward to what people nominate, and the rational behind their nominations, the cleverness, the ingenuity, the passion and humor are abundantly apparent,” said Peter Szatmary, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at LSSU.

This year, the top banished words were “no worries” and “wait, what?.”

They received more than 1,250 nominations from around the world.
