Several candidates made history on Tuesday, including here in Michigan.

Democratic State Representative Abdullah Hammoud was elected mayor of Dearborn, making him the first Arab American to hold that position in the city.

Nearly half the population of Dearborn is Arab, but Hammoud says they weren’t the only ones supporting him in the polls.

He says he will offer a fresh perspective as he takes over for Mayor Jack O’Reilly, who has served for the past 17 years.

In Virginia, voters elected their first woman and person of color as lieutenant governor.

Marine veteran Winsome Sears was a Jamaican when she entered the Marine Corps, but says she was already willing to fight and die for America.

The Republican says she will work with newly-elected Governor Glenn Youngkin to fully fund Virginia’s historically black colleges and universities.

And in Boston, City Councilor Michelle Wu was elected the city’s first female and Asian American mayor.

Wu grew up in Chicago, but moved to Boston to attend Harvard University and Harvard Law School.
