The opioid crisis is an ongoing issue nationwide, as well as in Michigan, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reporting how they are combatting the issue.

In 2019, Governor Whitmer established the Michigan Opioids Task Force under MDHHS to figure out how best to address the opioid crisis in Michigan.

The task force unveiled their 2020 annual report, which detailed strategies the group is focusing on such as educating the public on the crisis, supporting those in long term recovery, and increase treatment access in prisons and jails.

The report also included results from various town halls that were held by the task force to gather opinions on these strategies.

“All of the work that we do is geared at serving the public,” said Amy Dolinky, Senior Advisor for MDHHS’ Michigan Opioids Strategy.  “Having their voices at the table has been critical in in crafting future strategies, specifically the 2021 strategy.”

The task force will continue projects like free Narcan distribution and partnering with hospital emergency departments to give medication to patients for opioid use disorder.
