Bay Mills Swears in Whitney Gravelle as New Chairperson

After the resignation of the former Bay Mills Indian Community chairperson, they’ve been looking to elect someone to fill the position. They decided Whitney Gravelle was the ideal candidate and she was sworn in on Friday.

She will be the second woman ever elected to the position and also the youngest.  She’s previously served as a chief judge for the Bay Mills Tribal Court. A graduate of Michigan State College of Law, she also mentors indigenous youth for the Bay Mills Tribal Youth Program.

Gravelle said she’s honored to be able to serve as the new chair. “We have a really long history of our community carving a path forward and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without others, our ancestors carving that path for me long ago,” she said. “I’m just ready to do the hood work and help my tribe as much as possible.”

Gravelle added she wants to focus on addressing the spiritual hardships the COVID-19 pandemic has caused their community.
