U.S. defense officials say a U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots at an armed Iranian patrol boat.
The officials say the boat came within 150 yards of the U.S.S. Thunderbolt.
The U.S. ship tried to warn the boat with radio calls, flares and by sounding its whistle before it fired warning shots into the water.
In a statement, Iran’s official news agency said the U.S. ship made a "provocative move" against the patrol boat.
