WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is using his weekly radio and Internet address to reassure a nation shaken by the Fort Hood shootings. And, he says that while "we saw the worst of human nature on full display, we also saw the best of America," when wounded service members sprang into action to help their comrades.
UNDATED (AP) — One Muslim scholar says the suspected Fort Hood shooter has "in one crazy episode" undermined years of American Muslims' efforts to become part of the mainstream. Muqtedar Khan, who delivered Congressional testimony on U.S. policy in Afghanistan, says a lot of Muslims work very hard "to make America a better place." Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an American-born Muslim, is suspected of the rampage that left 13 dead and 30 more wounded. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans say the Democratic health care bill that's up for debate today in the House should be "withdrawn and reworked." In the GOP weekly radio address, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says the plan should be scraped in favor of modest health care changes that can gain bipartisan support. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama heads to Capitol Hill today as the House prepares to debate sweeping health care legislation. The White House says the president's visit is an effort to "rally the troops" as Democrats try to scrape together enough votes to get the legislation passed. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says the president is confident an overhaul bill will ultimately be sent to his desk. KABUL (AP) — Afghanistan's Defense Ministry says at least seven Afghan security force members are dead after a NATO airstrike mistakenly hit a joint base. Police say 15 Afghan soldiers and a policeman were also wounded at the base housing coalition troops and Afghan security forces.
