Posted: 11/7/2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama wants to "rally the troops" one more time when he heads to Capitol Hill today in hopes of putting a health care reform bill over the top. Meantime, House Democrats are still scouring their membership to ensure enough votes to pass the bill, which includes creation of a government run insurance operation.

UNDATED (AP) — Muslims nationwide are worried that the Fort Hood shootings will become a major setback to efforts to erase anti-Islamic stereotypes. Some Islamic leaders say it could pose the sternest test for U.S. Muslims since the Sept. 11 attacks. Major Muslim groups and mosques have condemned the killings but some Muslims say they are weary of apologizing for others' actions.

VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico (AP) — Days of torrential rain have flooded the homes of more than 200,000 people in Mexico's Tabasco state and at least three people have died. Some in the more than a dozen towns swamped by the rains complain no help has arrived. Floods occur there yearly despite government efforts to make improvements.

BRUSSELS (AP) — A top Pentagon official says more troops for Afghanistan are almost a sure thing when President Barack Obama's new plan for Afghanistan comes out. Undersecretary of Defense Michele Flournoy says a strategy decision will be announced within the next "couple or maybe a few weeks." She's part of a delegation that briefed NATO ambassadors on Thursday.

DANANG, Vietnam (AP) — He left Vietnam as a boat person on the day Saigon fell. More than 30 years later, Hung Ba Le came back by boat too -- this time in command of a U.S. Navy destroyer on a goodwill mission. The USS Lassen sailed into Danang, home of China Beach, where U.S. troops frequently headed for R&R during the war.
