WASHINGTON (AP) — The night before the House is expected to vote on health care legislation, Democrats appear to have broken through an impasse on abortion that dates to last summer. Under the late-night arrangement, abortion opponents will be given a chance to add tougher restrictions in the legislation. The House is expected to vote today on the bill that would extend health care coverage to tens of million and ban some insurance industry practices.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A pregnant woman, a recent heart attack survivor and a woman who had vowed to take on Osama bin Laden are among the 13 killed during a gunman's rampage Thursday at Texas' Fort Hood. A friend of 21-year-old Francheska Velez says the woman who was expecting a child was "the most fun and happy person you could know." Velez was preparing to return home to Chicago when she was gunned down. The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was shot and remains hospitalized.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is urging the nation not to jump to conclusions after a gunman's rampage at Texas' Fort Hood left 13 dead. Obama says officials "don't know all the answers yet" and don't have all the facts. Obama has ordered that flags at federal buildings be flown at half staff in honor of the victims until Veterans Day.

SEATTLE (AP) — A person-of-interest in the Halloween killing of a Seattle police officer has been shot and wounded by police. Police say detectives were investigating a tip in a Seattle suburb when the man drew a handgun. The shooting happened as a memorial for the slain officer drew to a close.

CHICAGO (AP) — A fourth teen is facing murder charges in the beating death of a Chicago high school honor student last month. The 14-year-old is accused of delivering the punch that rendered 16-year-old Derrion Albert unconscious. Albert's beating was caught on a cell phone camera.
