NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Yann Danis made 23 saves and stopped four in-close attempts in the third period against his former Islanders teammates, helping the New Jersey Devils beat New York 2-1 their fourth straight win.
Brian Rolston scored the winner on a power play and defenseman Cory Murphy added his first goal as a Devil as New Jersey posted its 10th win in 12 games. Frans Nielsen scored for the Islanders, who have dropped two straight after winning four in a row. Martin Biron had 29 saves for New York. The game also marked the return of Patrik Elias to the Devils' lineup. He missed the first 13 coming back from hip and groin surgery. Maple Leafs 3, Hurricanes 2. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jason Blake scored on a power play with 8:24 left and Jonas Gustavsson made 34 saves to help the Toronto Maple Leafs win for the second time in 14 games this season, 3-2 over the Carolina Hurricanes. John Mitchell and Nikolai Kulemin also scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs (2-7-5) have earned points in their last six games. Brandon Sutter and Sergei Samsonov scored for Carolina, off to the worst start in franchise history. Last in the NHL at 2-10-3, the Hurricanes are winless in their last 11 games. Flyers 5, Sabres 2. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Daniel Carcillo scored twice and Ray Emery made 28 saves to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to their fifth straight victory over the Buffalo Sabres, 5-2. Chris Pronger had a goal and assist, and James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe also scored. The Flyers (8-4-1) have won three straight by a combined score of 17-5. Emery improved to 5-1-0 in his last six starts. Derek Roy had a power-play goal and assist, rookie Tyler Myers also scored with the man advantage for Buffalo, and Ryan Miller made 32 saves. The Sabres (9-3-1) have lost two of their last three after an 8-1-1 start. Capitals 4, Panthers 1. SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Jose Theodore (JOH'-zay TAY'-uh-dohr) stopped 28 shots, Brian Pothier had a goal and two assists and the Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers 4-1 to end their three-game losing streak. Brendan Morrison scored twice and Tyler Sloan added a goal for the Capitals (9-3-4) in the opening contest of home-and-home series with the Panthers. The Capitals, who were again without injured star Alex Ovechkin, will face Florida (5-8-1) on Saturday night in Washington. Nathan Horton scored for Florida. Tomas Vokoun, coming off back-to-back shutouts, made 21 saves for the Panthers. Vokoun stopped 77 consecutive shots before Sloan scored in the first period. Stars 2, Canucks 1. DALLAS (AP) — Brad Richards scored midway through the second period, Brenden Morrow added a third-period power-play goal, and the Dallas Stars beat Vancouver 2-1 despite a 45-save performance by Canucks rookie Cory Schneider. Marty Turco stopped 32 shots to help Dallas snap the Canucks' winning streak at three games. Mason Raymond scored for Vancouver, making the second stop on a five-game trip. Schneider was outstanding in his first start and second appearance of the season. Andrew Raycroft, who started four straight in place of the injured Roberto Luongo (ribs), got a break after a 5-2 victory Thursday night in Minnesota. Avalanche 4, Blackhawks 3, SO. DENVER (AP) — Chris Stewart scored in the eighth round of the shootout, helping the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche remain unbeaten at home with a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Dustin Byfuglien (BUHF'-lihn) had a chance to tie, but sent his slap shot just wide. The two teams engaged in a nine-round shootout earlier this season. Ryan O'Reilly scored twice for Colorado in regulation, while David Jones added a short-handed goal. The Avalanche moved to 6-0 at Pepsi Center this season, matching the franchise record for consecutive home wins to start a season. Byfuglien, Duncan Keith and Andrew Ladd scored for the Blackhawks, who lost for the second straight night. Craig Anderson returned to the net after receiving a rare night off. The Avalanche goalie stopped 29 shots, including a vital save in overtime when he turned back Patrick Sharp's shot.
