Lake County Community Receives Grant Money

Half a million dollars in grants from the Michigan Development Corporation is making its way to a Lake County community.

Governor Granholm announced Monday that Yates Township will get more than $620,000 in grant money for projects in the historic community of Idlewild.

One grant will go towards creating a development plan for the Flamingo Club, which used to host stars like Louis Armstrong and B.B. King.

A second grant will help renovate the senior center that's in disrepair.

The township hopes to have the senior center back open by this time next year.

I can hear the music playing now ....Yeah for Idlewild...the town has been left out, neglected and forgotten for too long. This happens to be a historic cultural setting and area of Michigan once populated by African-Americans who were disallowed in white clubs elsewhere all over the United States. This is bringing historical preservation to MAIN STREET. African-Americans pay taxes also in the state of Michigan. Thank you. Governor Granholm. I hope to visit Idlewild again one of these 'good ol days." This is just a small remnant of what once was; and is good for this region. It will bring many visitors and perhaps a little commerce for Lake County or Baldwin, Michigan & Idlewild.

I wonder how many PERMANENT JOBS $620,000 would have created, or given to local schools rather than dumping it into a "NIGHTCLUB" that no one has money to go to anyway. No wonder this state is in Financial Ruin with throwing money away like this.

This looks like another case of people not wanting something, but getting it anyway, and willing to take it if someone else pays for it. When is Idlewild and Lake County going to pay for things like this. They had a Senior Center and let if fall into disrepair (they didn't want to support it) and now with State taxpayer money, they are willing to repair it to operate it until it once again falls into disrepair. At which time our then Governor will find him or her self obligated to be politically correct and offering our State funds for another 'rehabilitation' project.
