HUBBELLS-COACHING SWITCH

Lions try to regroup after latest disaster

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Jim Schwartz knows the Detroit Lions need to find some big plays in what has become a moribund offense.

He also knows that as long as star receiver Calvin Johnson is sidelined, those plays will be much harder to find.

Schwartz met with the media Monday after his Lions (1-6) lost 17-10 to St. Louis, ending the Rams' 17-game losing streak. With Johnson sidelined, the Lions have managed one touchdown in two games. On Sunday, rookie Matt Stafford didn't complete a pass to a wide receiver until the fourth quarter.

Schwartz isn't sure whether Johnson will be ready for Sunday's visit to Seattle (2-5), but said he's closer to recovering from his knee injury.

PISTONS-HAMILTON OUT

Pistons plan to rest Hamilton for another game

DETROIT (AP) — Richard Hamilton will miss a third straight game with a sprained right ankle Tuesday when the Detroit Pistons host the Orlando Magic.

Hamilton was injured late in last week's season-opening win at Memphis and postgame X-rays on the ankle were negative.

He scored a team-high 25 points in the victory and the Coatesville, Pa., native has led Detroit in scoring for seven straight seasons.

The Pistons struggled offensively without him in losses to Oklahoma City and Milwaukee.

GOVERNOR'S RACE-PERLES

Ex-Mich. St. coach mulls run for Mich. governor

DETROIT (AP) — Former Michigan State University football coach George Perles says he intends to announce after New Year's Day if he'll run for governor.

The third winningest coach in Spartan history (68-67-4) told The Associated Press on Monday that at the moment, he's "just looking into it."

The 75-year-old Democrat and Detroit native has been a member of the Michigan State Board of Trustees since 2006.

Perles was named MSU head coach in 1983 and has two Big Ten titles and a Rose Bowl victory. Before being fired in 1994, he served briefly as the school's athletic director.

Lt. Gov. John Cherry, state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith and health care advocate John Freeman also are seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nod. House Speaker Andy Dillon is considering a run.

CHILD ID PROGRAM

Michigan's Rodriguez helps kick off child ID drive

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez helped kick off a drive to distribute 290,000 child ID kits to every kindergarten and first-grade student in the state this fall.

He announced the initiative Monday at a news conference joined by local and federal law enforcement officials.

Rodriguez says his goal is for every student in Michigan to have the FBI-approved kits.

The kits help parents collect fingerprints and DNA in nonintrusive ways, list physical characteristics and add a picture to help locate missing children.

The National Child Identification Program says 800,000 children — one every 40 seconds — in the country are missing each year.

SCHEMBECHLER-LAWSUIT

Son of legendary Michigan coach sues stepmother

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The son of legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler is suing his stepmother over concerns about a trust her late husband created.

Glenn Schembechler III filed the lawsuit against Kathryn Schembechler, his father's third wife, in federal court Monday in Columbus, Ohio.

The lawsuit alleges that Kathryn Schembechler, of Boca Grande, Fla., is not providing Glenn Schembechler with quarterly statements about the trust that he's entitled to.

The lawsuit doesn't say how much money is at stake but says at least $75,000 is involved.

Bo Schembechler died in 2006.

Glenn Schembechler, of Worthington in suburban Columbus, was the only son of Bo and Millie Schembechler, the coach's second wife.

Bo Schembechler married Kathryn in 1993. Kathryn didn't have an attorney listed and the phone listing for her in Florida would not accept messages.

HUBBELLS-COACHING SWITCH

US ice dancers announce coaching switch

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Madison and Keiffer Hubbell, winners of the 2008 junior U.S. ice dance title, are switching coaches.

The Hubbells announced Monday they will now train with Pasquale Camerlengo, Angelika Krylova, Elizabeth Swallow and Natalia Deller at the Detroit Skating Club. They had spent the last 10 years in Ann Arbor, Mich., with Yuri Chesnichenko and Yaroslava Nechaeva.

Camerlengo and Krylova also coach Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali of Italy, the European silver medalists in dance.

The Hubbells were fourth at last season's nationals, their first as seniors. They have won U.S. titles at the juvenile, intermediate and junior levels.
